|Men's tennis opens 2013 at EWU|
After making noise on the national scene in the fall for the second straight year, the Idaho men's tennis team will get its 2013 season started on Sunday when it visits Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash., at 10:30 a.m.
The Vandals were represented in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November for the second consecutive season, as seniors Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar won the ITA Mountain Regional doubles championship. The duo went 2-1 at the indoor championship, knocking off doubles teams from USC and Columbia.
Akbar and Cirstea are ranked No. 46 in the nation and No. 1 in the Mountain Region in doubles heading into 2013. Akbar is also ranked No. 7 in the region in singles.
The Vandals return most of their core from last spring, when the team went 14-14 overall and 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. After a sluggish start, the 2012 team won six straight matches to reach the WAC championship match before falling to Hawai'i.
The Vandals will be on the road for the majority of the spring, but host WAC matches against New Mexico State on Mar. 29, UTSA on April 19 and Denver on April 21. Idaho also hosts Sacramento State on April 7 and BYU on April 13 in non-conference action.
