CHENEY, Wash. - The Idaho men's tennis team got its season started on the right foot, sweeping Eastern Washington 7-0 in Cheney on Sunday.
"It's a great way to start the year," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "I'm excited about what the men's team can do this spring." Idaho (1-0) won at the top two doubles spots to win the doubles point, led by its No. 46 nationally ranked pair of Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar, who won 8-6 over Joseph Cohen and Eduardo Martinez of EWU (1-1) at the No. 1 spot. Singles play was a little closer than the 7-0 final score might indicate, but Idaho was able to close out a few close matches. Dmitry Perevoshchikov won 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 2 over Martinez, and Cirstea won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. Ivan Krijanto won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 for Idaho. "They are a solid team and came out fired up to play us, competing hard and pushing us in several matches," Beaman said. "Abid really stood out with his wins at the top singles and doubles spots." Akbar avoided a three-set match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Cohen at No. 1 singles, while Cesar Torres won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Cristobal Ramos Salazar won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
