SPOKANE, Wash. - With a pair of wins on Saturday over Gonzaga and Whitworth, the Idaho men's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season.

Idaho beat Whitworth 7-0 Saturday morning, and beat Gonzaga 4-2 in the afternoon.

"It is nice to continue the undefeated season, and the win over GU is one we very easily could have lost," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "GU is going to pull off some upsets this year and if we did not pull out the doubles point with Ramos and Bendeck coming back from 1-4 I feel we probably would have been their first big upset."

Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos Salazar ended up winning 8-7 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for Idaho, after Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play against the Bulldogs, Dmitry Perevoshchikov earned a three-set win at No. 1, Cesar Torres won at No. 4 and Ramos Salazar won at No. 5 to give Idaho the victory.

"Dmitry pulled off a huge win at No. 1 singles, gutting out a brutal three set match on an injured foot," Beaman said.

The Vandals swept through singles and doubles against Whitworth. Cirstea won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, Torres won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Krijanto won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. The bottom half of the Idaho lineup featured players competing for the first time this spring. Filip Fichtel win 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Matt Oddonetto won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Jake Knox won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.

"The Whitworth match was a great opportunity to get all our guys into an actual match," Beaman said. "We have guys on our roster that would be playing up in the lineup at many Division I schools but with our strength and depth this year there are not a lot of chances to keep everybody match tough. All the guys showed up and played well, giving me confidence that they can push guys currently in the lineup and can step in if we are faced with injuries."

The Vandals open Western Athletic Conference play on Feb. 16 when the take on Utah State in Logan, Utah at 8:30 a.m. (PT). After that match Idaho will make the trip to Ogden, Utah to take on Weber State that evening.
