DENVER – The Idaho men’s tennis team earned a spot in the Western Athletic Conference finals for the second consecutive season with a 4-2 win over UTSA in Saturday’s semifinal.

The second-seeded Vandals got the early lead with an 8-5 doubles win at No. 1 from Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar and an 8-5 win at No. 3 from Dmitry Perevoshchikov and Cesar Torres. Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos Salazar fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Ramos Salazar, however, put Idaho ahead 2-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. UTSA’s came back to tie the match with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, but Bendeck and Torres won their singles matches at Nos. 4 and 5 to seal the victory for Idaho.

The Vandals improve to 21-6 on the season with the win. Idaho will face the either top-seeded Denver or No. 4 New Mexico State in Sunday’s championship match, which begins at 9 a.m. (PT). Idaho beat NMSU 5-2 earlier this season, and had its match against Denver suspended when it was tied 3-3. Idaho will be seeking its first men’s tennis conference championship since winning the Big Sky in 1978.
