|Ramos Salazar reaches semis|
WACO, Texas – Cristobal Ramos Salazar went 3-1 to reach the singles semifinals to highlight the Baylor Intercollegiate for the Idaho men’s tennis team.
Ramos Salazar won 6-0, 6-0 in each of his first two matches before a 6-3, 6-1 win to reach the semifinals. He fell to Gonzaga’s Vicente Veras 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 to come up short of a championship berth.
Idaho’s Artemiy Nikitin won his first round match in three sets before falling to Oklahoma’s Axel Alvarez in the round of 16. Jose Bendeck reached the round of 16 as well before falling 7-5, 6-4 to eventual champion Julian Lenz of Baylor.
“The guys had some good matches against some high level competition, especially Jose with his very close match with the eventual champion,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “We will use what we learned from this event to continue to get ready for the regional tournament.”
Odon Barta lost in a tough three-set match 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-2 to eventual Green Draw champion Arturo Pinazo of Laredo.
In doubles play Bendeck and Ramos Salazar reached the quarterfinals while Nikitin and Barta won their opening round match to reach the round of 16.
The Vandals will be back in action at the Gonzaga/EWU Fall Tournament Sept. 27-29 in Spokane, Wash.
