SKILLMAN, N.J. – With the spring tennis season looming, five University of Idaho tennis players earned preseason regional rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Idaho’s men’s doubles duo of Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos Salazar, the reigning Mountain Regional doubles champions, are ranked as the No. 1 duo in the region, while Bendeck is ranked No. 11 in singles and fellow Vandal Artemiy Nikitin is right behind at No. 12.

“Jose and Cristobal had a great fall and I am looking for them to carry this over into the spring season with the goal of qualifying for the NCAA doubles championships,” Idaho men’s coach Jeff Beaman said. “With Jose and Artemiy in the singles rankings it is great to see them recognized for their strong fall seasons and I feel we have a few more guys that could make their way into the regional rankings by the end of the season.”

On the women’s side, Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz earned a No. 8 doubles ranking, and Lozano is ranked No. 17 in singles heading into the season.

“That is a great accomplishment for Vicky to have a regional ranking in singles and Vicky and Almu to be also regionally-ranked in doubles,” Idaho women’s coach Myriam Sopel said. “Now, it shows us that we have a strong basis for the spring season. We don’t want to rest on our laurels, so we’ll use this strong basis to improve and get better to be the best ones in the conference and work hard toward our strong goals for this season.”

The Vandal women open the spring season on Jan. 17 against Washington State in Pullman, Wash., while the men open spring play on Jan. 25 against Western Athletic Conference foe Seattle U in Cheney, Wash. The WAC tournament for both the men and women is April 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M.
