SEATTLE – The Idaho men’s tennis team couldn’t quite get over the hump in a 5-2 loss at No. 44 Washington on Sunday.

“Today was a pretty good day of tennis in terms of the effort and competitiveness on the court,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “UW is a nationally ranked program and I like the way our guys took on the challenge. I would definitely consider this match a small step in the right direction of reaching our goals at the conference tournament.”

The Vandals (3-3) won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles but narrowly fell 8-6 at No. 2 and lost 8-3 at No. 3, conceding the point to the Huskies.

After straight-set UW wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, Jose Bendeck pulled out a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(5) win at No. 3 and Cristobal Ramos Salazar won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. But Washington took 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4 victories at Nos. 5 and 6 for the 5-2 win.

“I’m very proud of Cristobal for the work he’s put in,” Beaman said. “The results are showing that he can compete with nationally ranked players.”

The Vandals begin a stretch of five matches in one week when they visit Arizona on Feb. 15. The stretch includes Western Athletic Conference matches at New Mexico State and against Kansas City.
