EL PASO, Texas – The Idaho women’s tennis
team made it two wins in two days with a 5-2 win at the University of Texas-El
Paso Saturday.
The Vandals clinched the doubles point by
winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches as Victoria Lozano and Lauren Simpson
won 8-4 at No. 1, and Yvette Ly and Molly Knox won 8-3 at No. 2.
“This was a very nice win for us,” Idaho
coach Tyler Neill said. “UTEP is a very solid team and they had a good crowd
supporting them. We knew it would be a tight match and we were prepared
for a tough fight. I thought we played some of our best doubles today.”
The Vandals won four of six matches in
singles action, picking up wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.
Victoria Lozano needed three sets to win at
No. 1, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Barbara Maciocha picked up another three-set win
at No. 3, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. Molly Knox won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 and Yvette Ly won
6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 for the Vandals.
“Molly played very well in both singles and
doubles,” Neill said. “In singles, she was aggressive, but steady, and she was
able to control most of the match. I was proud of our team for being able to
step up with Lauren being out of the singles lineup.”
Silvia Irimescu lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2
singles, and Alejandra Lozano fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The Vandals improve to 6-3 with the win, and
have two matches remaining on their current four-match road trip. Idaho faces
Alabama Birmingham on Sunday and New Mexico State on Monday.
