HILO, Hawai'i - The Idaho women's tennis team played its first of four matches in four days in impressive fashion, beating University of Hawai'i-Hilo 7-0 on Thursday, in a match that included five straight-set victories in singles.
"This was a good start to our trip," Idaho coach Tyler Neill said. "It was good for us to get used to playing in the heat and humidity."
Idaho swept the doubles point with an 8-1 win from Victoria Lozano and Lauren Simpson at No. 1, an 8-6 win from Molly Knox and Yvette Ly at No. 2 and an 8-0 win from Barbara Maciocha and Natalie Kirch at No. 3.
In singes action, the Vandals got straight set wins from Lozano (No. 1), Maciocha (No. 3), Knox (No. 4) Alejandra Lozano (No. 5) and Natalie Kirch (No. 6), while Irimescu's No. 2 match went three sets before she won 6-7; 6-1; 10-6 to complete the Vandal sweep.
"I thought everyone played pretty well," Neill said. "Silvia had a nice match today. She had a tough first set, but then she played great for the rest of the match."
The win is the fifth straight for Idaho, and lifts the Vandals to 9-3 on the season.
The Vandals have a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches on the docket over the next two days, as Idaho jumps to Honolulu to face Hawai'i on April 1, and Louisiana Tech on April 2. The Vandals will face Chaminade in a non-conference match on April 3 before returning home.
