|Women's tennis falls to Hawai`i|
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Idaho women's tennis team had its five-match win streak snapped on Friday as it fell 4-2 to Western Athletic Conference foe Hawai'i.
The Vandals dropped the top four singles matches before Molly Knox and Yvette Ly picked up wins at No. 5 and 6. The doubles point was not played due to rain. Idaho's last loss was back on Feb. 27 against Montana.
"This was a tough loss," Idaho coach Tyler Neill said. "Hawai'i is a very good team that is strong at the top of their lineup. We didn't play bad, but we need to find a way to compete a little better at the top."
Victoria Lozano fell 6-2; 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Lauren Simpson retired after trailing 6-0; 3-0 at No. 2 for the Vandals. Silvia Irimescu lost 6-3; 6-1 at No. 3 and Barbara Maciocha fell 6-3; 6-0 at No. 4. Knox was leading 3-2 in the decisive third set when her opponent Alyssa Nafarrete retired at No. 5, and Ly won 6-4; 6-4 at No. 6.
"I think our team's depth really showed today," Neill said. "Molly and Yvette both played very nice singles matches. Molly competed very well, coming back from the first set to win her match. Hopefully we can bounce back quickly and use this loss to improve in our next match."
The loss drops Idaho to 9-4 on the season and 1-2 in WAC play. The Vandals are back in action in Honolulu on Saturday as they face Louisiana Tech in another WAC match. Idaho wraps up its Hawai'i trip with a non-conference showdown against Chaminade on April 3.
