|Vandals split 4-3 matches|
MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho women's tennis team split a pair of down-to-the-wire matches on Saturday, picking up a 4-3 Western Athletic Conference win over Utah State, before falling to Gonzaga by the same score.
With the first match tied 3-3 and only the No. 4 singles point left to be decided, Idaho senior Barbara Maciocha found herself facing match-point trailing 5-4 in the third set. But Maciocha battled all the way back to win 7-5 and clinch the match for the Vandals. In doing so, she earned her 80th career singles victory, passing Patricia Ruman to become Idaho's all-time singles wins leader.
After losing the doubles point against Utah State, the Vandals got singles victories from Victoria Lozano at No. 1, Molly Knox at No. 5 and Yvette Ly at No. 6 in addition to Maciocha's at No. 4.
The Vandals opened their match against Gonzaga with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to win the doubles point and go ahead 1-0 entering singles play. The Bulldogs responded with wins at the top two singles spots, and the Vandals won the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, pulling one match from victory. But Gonzaga closed out two-set wins at No. 5 and 6 singles to take the 4-3 win.
"Utah State was a big win, and that was the important one in the conference standings, so I'm glad we got that," Idaho head coach Tyler Neill said. "Obviously losing to Gonzaga is a disappointing loss. I thought we fought hard, we just didn't play well."
With the split, the Vandals move to 12-5 on the season and 3-2 in WAC play. Idaho will travel to California next week for matches against Cal. State Fullerton on April 13, UC Riverside on April 14, San Jose State on April 15 and Fresno State on April 16 before returning home to host Eastern Washington on April 19 and Lewis-Clark State College on April 14. The WAC tournament is April 29-May 1 in Boise, Idaho.
