FULLERTON, Calif. - For the third time in as many matches, an Idaho women's tennis match went down to the final point before a winner could be decided, and the Vandals came out on top Wednesday as Molly Knox and Barbara Maciocha clinched three-set wins to top Cal. State Fullerton 4-3.

The Vandals lost the doubles point and trailed 3-2 with only Knox and Maciocha still playing, and Knox trailed 4-0 in the third set of her No. 5 singles match. But she rallied from behind to take a 7-6 win and even the score at 3-3. Maciocha then clinched the match with a 6-2 win in the third set at No. 4.

"This was a crazy match, but we seem to be having a lot of them this season," Idaho coach Tyler Neill said. "It looked like Molly's opponent was going to run away with the third set, but Molly kept fighting and slowly got back into the match. Molly was incredibly clutch and it was a great comeback."

Four of the six singles matches went to a third set in the match. After losing the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, the Vandals trailed 1-0 heading into singles play. Victoria Lozano won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but the Vandals fell at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots, both in three sets. Yvette Ly won 6-4, 6 -3 at No. 6 singles before Knox and Maciocha sealed the win.

"Cal State Fullerton was a tough team," Neill said. "They were very consistent and made us work for every point.  This match could have gone either way, but fortunately we came out on top."

The Vandals were in a similar position earlier this season when they were tied with Portland 3-3, and Lozano trailed 4-0 in her No. 1 singles match before battling back to win the match.

"It reminded me of our match with Portland where Vicky came back from 4-0 down in the third," Neill said. "I have never had a match end like this before this year, but this season we have had two."

The Vandals improve to 13-5 on the season and have won four of their last five matches. Idaho will face UC Riverside on Thursday before facing Western Athletic Conference opponents San Jose State on April 15 and Fresno State on April 16.
