MOSCOW, Idaho – Head coach Pete Showler and the University of Idaho women’s soccer team hosted its season-ending awards banquet alongside Vandal volleyball Sunday afternoon and celebrated a season of another step forward.

The Vandal women went 8-11-3 overall, 3-3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference and reached the WAC Tournament semifinal round for the first time in school history in 2011 and posted a .500 or better conference record for the second-consecutive season – also a program first.

Junior midfielder Jill Flockhart (Salmon Arm, B.C.), who started all 22 games, scored two goals and led the team with six assists in 2011, was voted Players’ Player of the Year by her teammates to lead the awards. Flockhart was selected to the All-WAC First Team for the second year in a row this season.

Also in a player vote, junior defender Lauren Layton (Spokane, Wash.), a defender with three assists this season, was voted Most Inspirational Player. With her three assists this season, the outside back now has 14 career assists – the second-highest total in school history.

For the third year in a row, junior forward Chelsea Small (Solana Beach, Calif.) earned the Golden Boot Award as the team’s leading scorer. Small led Idaho with 10 goals and 24 total points this season. Small was a First-Team All-WAC selection for the third year in a row and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-West Region pick for the second year in a row.

Junior defender Christine Leathem (Surrey, B.C.) graded out as the team’s top defensive player and earned the Golden Shinnie Award. Leathem was honored on the WAC All-Tournament Team in November after her standout play in helping lead Idaho to its first conference tournament victory.

Junior midfielder Megan Lopez (Oceanside, Calif.) was honored with the Kathy Clark Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given each year to the one player from each team at Idaho who exemplifies scholarship, leadership and citizenship, in addition to athletic exploits. Lopez started every game at center mid for Idaho, scored one goal and sent two assists. She is a two-time WAC All-Academic honoree who is also active in Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Idaho soccer also honored fifth-year senior Alison “Larry” Page at the event. Page, the lone senior from the 2011 squad, was the first commit for Showler when he became Idaho’s head coach in 2005. The defender from Horsham, England, has been a team captain for the last two seasons.
