INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Idaho volleyball team was recognized by the NCAA on Thursday when it received the Public Recognition Award, which is given each year to teams with Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent in each sport.

Idaho was the only volleyball team in the Western Athletic Conference to earn the recognition.

"It says a lot about our staff and the environment that we provide here," Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. "We haven't had a lot of turnover. We've been really consistent in keeping kids here and training them. When kids get here they fall in love with the university, and we have a great support staff to provide a great experience for them, not only academically but athletically to where our turnover and return rate has been great."

The APR scores for this year's publically recognized teams ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000, with the majority of the recognized teams earning a perfect score. Full APRs will be released by the NCAA on June 20. The award is the second for an Idaho team. Idaho's women's golf team earned the recognition in 2010.

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

"These teams prove that it is possible to not only balance academic and athletic commitment, as most student-athletes do; but to exceed standards and post outstanding academic scores," said NCAA President Mark Emmert. "The drive and determination shown in the classroom and on the field by these men and women represent what it means to be an NCAA student-athlete."
