|Idaho trio gets preseason honor|
College Sports Madness released its 2012-13 preseason all-Western Athletic Conference women's basketball teams, and three Vandal players were among the 10 to receive the recognition.
Junior Alyssa Charlston was a first-team selection, while sophomores Krissy Karr and Stacey Barr were picked to the second-team.
"It's great having three people on the preseason team," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "So much of preseason stuff is based on what you did the year before, and certainly Alyssa had a great year and deserves to be on the first-team. It also shows the years that those two, Krissy and Stacey, had as freshmen last year, and the respect that they got based off of that."
Charlston was a first-team All-WAC selection last season after averaging 14.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore. She also earned Academic All-American, WAC Player of the Week, WAC all-tournament team and Lady Griz Classic all-tournament team honors. Her 1.03 blocks per game ranked sixth in the WAC and she recorded 11 double-doubles on the season.
Karr was a WAC all-freshman team pick in 2011-12 and averaged 6.9 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game, starting 26 games at point guard for the Vandals. Karr scored in double figures eight times, including a 13-point, 10 assist double-double. Her 4.0 assists per game ranked fourth in the WAC.
Despite coming off the bench in all but four games for the Vandals in 2011-12, Barr ranked second on the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game and fourth in rebounding, with 4.0 boards per game. A fearless shooter, Barr connected on 62 3-pointers as a freshman, the fourth-highest single-season total in program history. She scored in double figures 20 times for Idaho and scored 20 or more points four times.
"Preseason team rankings and player rankings don't mean anything if you don't go out and back it up throughout the year," Newlee said. "While it is nice that we got this recognition, we have a lot of work ahead of us, and those three would know better than anyone that you have to go out and do it on the floor."
The WAC Coaches and Media polls, including preseason all-conference teams and predicted order of finish, will be released later this month. The Vandals have their first exhibition game of 2012-13 on Nov. 2 against Western Oregon, and open up the regular season on Nov. 9 at Wyoming.
