HOUSTON - A pair of Idaho women's tennis players made the trip to Houston to play in the University of Houston Cougar Classic over the weekend, and freshman Rita Bermudez took third place in the Fred Couples draw to highlight the event for Idaho.
Bermudez won her first singles match in three sets, before falling in a three-setter in the semifinals of the draw. She rebounded in the third-place match to win in straight sets and go 2-1 in singles in the event.
Junior Vicky Lozano went 1-2 in singles play, as she dropped her first-round match 6-1, 7-6 before winning her first consolation match 6-3, 6-4. In the consolation finals she lost a three-setter, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 to go 1-2 in singles.
The two teamed up to go 1-1 in doubles play. They lost their opening round doubles match 8-3 before cruising through their next match with an 8-1 win. The consolation doubles final was not played.
The event was the last fall event on the schedule for the Idaho women. The Vandals will open team play against Washington State on Jan. 19.
