MOSCOW - Myriam Sopel, a former women's tennis standout at Indiana University, has been hired as the head women's tennis coach at the University of Idaho.

Sopel comes to Idaho from Wagner College, where she was the head women's tennis coach.

Sopel graduated with high distinction from Indiana in May, 2011. She compiled a career 59-44 singles record and an 89-59 doubles record in four seasons in Bloomington. Sopel was a part of two Indiana teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament during her four years, and the Hoosiers were ranked as high as No. 30 in the nation during her career.

Sopel was a three-time Academic All-American and three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and was also the 2010-11 recipient of the 1A Faculty Athletic Representatives Academic Excellence Award for having a GPA of 3.8 or better upon graduation. She holds her Bachelor's of Arts in Journalism with a second major in Spanish.

Sopel takes over for Dan Pollock, who joined the tennis staff at BYU.
