|Vandals beat No. 66 Fresno State|
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Idaho women’s tennis team picked up its fifth consecutive won on Thursday night, doing so in dramatic fashion, topping No. 66 Fresno State 4-3 in Pullman, Wash. The win is Idaho’s first all-time against the Bulldogs, going 0-10 prior to Thursday.
“This is a great win for the women’s program,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “I’m very proud of how they competed against a very tough Fresno State team.”
With the match tied 3-3, Belen Barcenilla overcame a 4-6 loss in the first set at No. 6 singles to win 6-3, 6-3 in the second and third sets to clinch Idaho’s victory. The Vandals improve to 5-1 on the season with the win.
Idaho got on the board first by winning the top two doubles matches for the 1-0 match lead headinginto singles.
Idaho’s Victoria Lozano pulled out a 7-6(1) 2-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Sophie Watts, the No. 41 ranked singles player in Division I. Almudena Sanz fell in straight sets at No. 2 singles but Galina Bykova won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 for the Vandals. The Bulldogs got straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles before Barcenilla clinched Idaho’s win.
“A huge performance by Belen,” Beaman said. “She’s made so much progress from this time last year and to step up and win with everything on her shoulders really showed that progress.”
The Vandals continue action against Utah State in Pullman, Wash., at 4 p.m.
