DENVER – Idaho sophomore women’s tennis player Rita Bermudez earned Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors Tuesday after playing a huge role in Idaho’s 4-0 win at Grand Canyon in Bermudez’s home state of Arizona.

Bermudez, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz. (Canyon del Oro HS), won both her singles and doubles matches in Idaho’s 4-0 win at Grand Canyon. In her return to her home state of Arizona, Bermudez’s 8-6 doubles win with teammate Galina Bykova was the difference-maker in Idaho winning the doubles point, as the Vandals and ‘Lopes split the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches. In singles play, her 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 gave Idaho the match-clinching point in the 4-0 win. Despite the score, the match was extremely close. The doubles point could have gone either way, and when Bermudez clinched the match for Idaho the remaining three matches were very much in doubt.

“Rita played great and it was great that her friends and family were able to come see her in her home state,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “Her clinching her singles match was critical for us. That’s a match that really could have gone either way so her performance in singles and doubles really helped the team to a win against the second place team in the conference.”

Bermudez and the Vandals have three more matches in the southwest coming up, facing UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Apr. 11, and taking on Arkansas State and WAC-foe New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., Apr. 12 and 13. The WAC tournament is Apr. 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M.
