EL PASO, Texas – The Idaho women’s tennis team earned its 15th win of the season with a 5-2 victory at UTEP on Friday.
After splitting the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, Almudena Sanz and Victoria Lozano erased an early deficit at No. 1 doubles to take a 9-8(8-6) win to give the Vandals the early lead. Idaho then picked up singles victories at Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 for its fourth consecutive win.
“This was a tough match where pulling out the doubles point was key,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “Vicky had a big day with her and Almu digging themselves out of a very big hole at No. 1 doubles for the tie-breaker win, then beating a tough player at the top of the singles lineup in straight sets.”
Friday’s match was the first of three in consecutive days in the Southwest desert. The Vandals will face Arkansas State (Apr. 12) and New Mexico State (April 13) in Las Cruces, N.M., which is also the site of the upcoming Western Athletic Conference tournament, Apr. 25-27.
“We will be playing in these conditions at the end of the month so for each player to learn something about how and how not to play here is critical.”
Idaho improves to 15-3 on the season with the win, while UTEP falls to 11-12.
