BOISE, Idaho – The University of Idaho women’s tennis teamed earned a pair of conference victories on Saturday to improve their winning streak to 11 games.

The Vandals opened WAC play against conference foes Louisiana Tech and Utah State but brushed aside both squads. Idaho defeated the Lady Techsters 6-1 and knocked off the Aggies 5-2.

“Any time you can get two conference wins in a day, it is a good day of tennis,” Neill said. “It was our first match playing outside this season, but we didn’t have any problem adjusting.”

In the morning, Idaho started strong to take and early lead against Louisiana Tech by sweeping doubles.

“I was very happy with our doubles,” Idaho Women’s Tennis Head Coach Tyler Neill said. “I thought we were very aggressive and we took control of them early on in doubles.”

Idaho won all but one singles match but was pushed by a valiant Tech performance. Four of the six matches went to three sets with Idaho coming out on top in three of those matches. Maria Perevoshchikova, Alexandra Ulesanu, Basia Maciocha, Jana Siwa, and Natalie Kirch all won their singles matches.

“In singles we really didn’t start off well, losing the first set in four of the six singles matches,” Neill said. “I was impressed that Alex was able to regain her composure to win her match in three sets and clinch the match.”

The Vandals received another boost as Silvia Irimescu made her return from injury in the match against Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

“Even though Silvia lost, I thought she had a solid match; especially considering this was her first match back from a broken foot, Neill said. “It is good to have her back in the lineup.”

Idaho also swept doubles against Utah State on their way to a second victory on Saturday. Perevoshchikova, Maciocha, Siwa and Yvette Ly all won their doubles and singles matches against the Aggies.

“Utah State is a team of fighters, but I feel like we matched their intensity,” Neill said. “I thought Yvette played very well, getting up early in both her singles and doubles matches and not letting up until the matches were over.”

The Vandals are back in action on Sunday with another conference clash against Boise State.
