MOSCOW – The University of Idaho women’s tennis team surpassed their win total from last season with a pair of wins against Seattle University and Lewis-Clark State College on Sunday.

Idaho notched wins number 17 and 18 with 6-1 victories over the Redhawks at home and LCSC in Lewiston, Idaho.

“Seattle showed a lot of depth and competed well at all the positions,” Women’s Tennis Head Coach Tyler Neill said. “Lewis-Clark State played a tough match and their girls showed their determination, especially in the doubles.”

Maria Perevoshchikova, Alexandra Ulesanu, Barbara Maciocha, Jana Siwa and Natalie Kirch each won two singles on the day. Perevoshchikova lost only one game in her two singles matches defeating Jamie Chan of LCSC 6-0, 6-0 and Audree Jenks of SU 6-1, 6-0. Both wins came from the No. 1 position.

“Some people performed very well, while others need to learn from their matches today,” Neill said. “We didn’t play our best, but we got the job done.”

The Vandal women took two out of three doubles match against Seattle University to earn a point but LCSC earned the doubles point during the afternoon match.

“In several matches we fell into early deficits, and then found it difficult to come back after being down,” Neill said. “Most were able to come back, but we need to be able to jump on our opponents early in the match and not make it so difficult on ourselves.”

Idaho now prepares for a busy end to the season with five matches this week including conference showdowns against New Mexico State, Fresno State and Hawaii in Las Cruces, N.M.

“I was happy we managed to pull out the victories and I think these matches will definitely help our players become tougher going into the final conference matches,” Neill said.

The Vandal women start the week off with the final home match of the season against Eastern Washington on Tuesday.
