DENVER – For the second week in a row, University of Idaho men swept the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, which were announced by the league on Tuesday.

Senior Stephane Colle earned WAC Track Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row, while sophomore Ugis Svazs earned his first career Field Athlete of the Week award. The two honors bring Idaho’s total to eight so far this outdoor season. The Vandal men have won the last five consecutive field awards, with four different honorees during that span.

Colle, a distance runner from St-Eustache, Quebec (Concordia University), made an all-time Idaho top-10 entry for the second week in a row with a 3:47.86 and eighth-place finish in his heat of the 1500m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on Sunday.

Colle’s time is ninth-fastest in Idaho history and second-fastest in the WAC so far this season. It’s the fastest time in the event by a Vandal since Bernd Schroeder ran a 3:45.08 in 1998.

Svaz, a thrower from Kuldiga, Latvia (Murjanu Sport Gymnasium), took over the WAC lead in the javelin on Saturday at the Duane Hartman Invitational with a career-best throw of 227-5 (69.32m), which is the best in the WAC by nearly 10 feet. He finished second overall and was the top collegiate thrower in the competition.

The mark moves Svazs to 13th in the West Region and 26th overall in the NCAA in the event, as well as third all-time in the Idaho record books. His throw is the best by a Vandal since Oscar Duncan’s set the school record in 1996 with a toss of 238-6.

Colle and a small group of Vandal runners will compete in the Oregon Twilight on Saturday at Eugene, Ore., but most of the Idaho men’s and women’s team will be at home for the Vandal Jamboree on Friday and Saturday, the inaugural meet on the freshly-renovated Dan O’Brien Track & Field Complex.
