|Volleyball picked second|
DENVER - The Idaho volleyball team was picked second in the 2012 Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, and two Vandals were selected to the preseason All-WAC team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Idaho senior middle blocker Alex Sele and junior outside hitter Allison (Walker) Baker were selected to the preseason All-WAC team. Sele was a second-team All-WAC pick in 2011 after averaging 1.77 kills and 1.08 blocks per game while hitting .283 for the season. Baker, a two-time first-team All-WAC selection, led the WAC in conference matches with 4.31 kills per game and hit .212.
"The two kids on that team, Alex and Allison, when they're playing their game, they're going to be pretty hard to stop," Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. "We have a couple other kids who are that way too who maybe didn't get recognized. We're pretty excited for the year and for things to get going."
The Vandals went 10-4 in the WAC last year and finished tied for second with New Mexico State, which was picked to win the league in 2012. The Aggies received eight first-place votes in the poll and 79 points overall, while Idaho got the other two top votes and 67 points overall.
"It's great anytime our program is recognized," Buchanan said. "We don't want second but it's awesome that we're picked near the top, it shows where our program has come and the things that we're doing - now we have to back that."
WAC newcomer UTSA was picked third, just ahead of Utah State and Texas State. Denver was picked fifth, San Jose State sixth, and UT Arlington, Seattle U and Louisiana Tech rounded out the poll.
New Mexico State sophomore Meredith Hays was selected as the preseason Player of the Year.
