|Northridge downs Idaho in four|
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Idaho volleyball team dropped its fourth consecutive match, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Cal. State Northridge on Monday afternoon, wrapping up its four-match California swing.
The Vandals lost 28-26, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 to fall to 2-5 on the season while the Matadors improve to 4-2.
"Every team that we played was good, we didn't lost a match to a team that wasn't deserving," Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. "As we go back, we need to be better out of system. That's the biggest thing."
The Idaho lineup looked a little different Monday than it did in Idaho's first five matches. Senior Jenny Feicht got the start at setter over fellow senior Ryann Carter, and tallied 44 assists, nine digs and two blocks. Sophomore Jessica Hastriter took over the outside hitter position previously held by freshman Katelyn Peterson, and finished with 12 kills while hitting .200.
Some of the names that didn't change in Idaho's lineup, including Allison (Walker) Baker, Alyssa Schultz and Alex Sele, lived up to their high standards Monday. Baker extended her double-double streak to seven matches with a team-high 20 kills and 12 digs, and added two blocks. Schultz hit a team-best .520 with 13 kills and no errors on 25 attempts, and had two blocks as well. Sele finished with five kills and hit .333 while adding a team-best four blocks. Julia Church led the Vandals with 14 digs and had one kill on two attempts.
Idaho hit .225 as a team in the match, but Northridge hit a blazing .327 and had 12 more kills than the Vandals, a 66-54 advantage. The Matadors also out-blocked Idaho 8-7 and out-dug the Vandals 67-62.
"We got better as the match went on, but we had too many little errors," Buchanan said. "We've got to be able to side out at a higher percentage and we need to block better."
Idaho will return to action Sept. 7-9 at the Verizon Volleyball Challenge in Honolulu, Hawai'i where it will take on UCLA (Sept. 7), Hawai'i (Sept. 8) and San Diego State (Sept. 9).
