HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Idaho volleyball team improved in nearly every facet of the game Sunday night, boasting its highest hitting percentage (.250), most blocks (13.0), and second most assists (58), in a match this season, but in the end San Diego State edged the Vandals 3-2 to wrap up the Verizon Volleyball Challenge hosted by Hawai'i.

The Vandals fell 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 24-26 and 15-12 to fall to wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 2-8 record. San Diego State improves to 6-2 on the year with the win.

The Vandals were led by junior Allison (Walker) Baker who finished with 28 kills, hit .355, and added a team-high 15 digs and two blocks. Senior Alex Sele had eight kills and three blocks for Idaho while hitting .353. Alyssa Schultz and Jessica Hastriter each added seven kills for the Vandals, Ashley Christman had five and Katelyn Peterson finished with four.

Senior Ryann Carter finished with 55 assists, one ace and four blocks in the match, while setting the Vandals to their highest hitting percentage of 2012. Idaho finished with 61 kills and 21 errors on 160 attempts to hit .250. Julia Church had 11 digs and a team-high five blocks for the Vandals, including three solo blocks. Janelle Chow finished with 13 digs for Idaho, while Jenna Ellis had seven digs and two aces.

The Vandals were sharp, but the Aztecs were just a little bit better Sunday. SDSU hit .260 for the match with 71 kills, and held a slim 65-62 advantage in digs. SDSU hit .444 in the decisive fifth set to help nullify Idaho's .409 hitting percentage in that set and clinch the victory.

After a 2-1 start to the season the Vandals have dropped seven consecutive matches heading into Western Athletic Conference play. The Vandals host Denver on Sept. 13 and New Mexico State on Sept. 15 to get the conference season started. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
