|Vandals top Drake|
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Idaho volleyball team hung on for its second win in three tries at the Wyoming Invite with a 3-1 (25-14; 30-28; 20-25; 26-24) victory over Drake on Saturday.
The Vandals (2-1) cruised to victory in the first set and led 16-10 in the second before Drake (1-2) made its push. Idaho edged the Bulldogs 30-28 in the set but Drake kept its hopes alive with a 25-20 win in set three to force a fourth set. Idaho again held a big lead in the set, 18-11, before Drake made one final charge. The Bulldogs eventually took a 24-23 lead but Idaho earned the final three points of the match for the victory.
“We started out strong and we were doing some great things,” Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. “Drake did a great job of learning our strengths and taking us out of system. We just have to make sure we adjust back. If we could take one thing to work on, we just need to communicate and trust each other as a team. We have the potential to do some great things.”
Idaho’s balanced offensive attack resulted in 14 kills from sophomore Katelyn Peterson, 12 from Alyssa Schultz, nine from Ashley Christman, and eight each from Taylor Wilkinson and Jessica Hastriter. Schultz also added six blocks, four digs and an ace and Peterson tallied nine digs.
“Our middles are being physical,” Buchanan said. “If we can keep it spread, it’s going to be hard for people to stay with us.”
Idaho hit .213 in the match while Drake hit .190. The Bulldogs out-blocked the Vandals 11.0-9.0 and Idaho held a slim 56-55 edge in digs.
Meredith Coba had 50 assists in the match and added four kills, eight digs and three blocks. Jenna Ellis had a team-high 13 digs and one of Idaho’s three service aces, and freshman Terra Varney added 12 digs and two assists. Redshirt-freshman Ali Forde had four kills.
The Vandals wrap up the tournament Saturday afternoon against Stetson at 4 p.m. (PT).
