BOISE, Idaho – When Idaho’s offense is clicking on all cylinders, seemingly every offensive option is open. That was the case Friday as the Vandal volleyball team beat Sacramento State 3-1 at the Bronco Volleyball Classic.

Idaho middle blocker Alyssa Schultz led the charge with 12 kills and no errors, hitting .545 and added four blocks. That opened things up for outside hitter Katelyn Peterson, who finished with a career-high 18 kills while hitting .457.

“That’s the only reason that we were left one-on-one out at the pin,” Buchanan said, referring to Schultz’s dominant performance. “That’s how you want your team to be able to hold the middle and push it to the outside. We did a great job with our serving, getting them out of system that allowed us to get a lot of free balls so we could run a lot of fast things and we were in system.”

Meredith Coba set the balanced attack and finished with 43 assists. Jenna Ellis finished with 24 digs for the Vandals, who hit .305 in the match, their second-highest percentage of the season. Idaho also controlled the Hornets from the service line, keeping them out of system for a majority of the match.

“Those are the greatest kinds of games to play,” Schultz said. “It’s so much fun because we’re all doing our jobs and that makes everything so much easier. We have our choice of where to hit, Meredith has her choice of who to set, we can pick our targets in serving. That’s what volleyball is all about.”

Jessica Hastriter finished with nine kills, Taylor Wilkinson added six and Ashley Christman had four. Michele Brown served up three of Idaho’s seven aces, Peterson added two, and Terra Varney and Jenna Ellis each had one.

With Varney at the service line, Idaho jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the fourth set while.

“I would say we had them out of system for most of that game, and they started to break,” Buchanan said of Idaho’s fourth set.

The Vandals held Sacramento State to a .134 hitting percentage, out-dug the Hornets 56-52, and out blocked them 7.0-4.0.

Idaho won for the second straight day, improving to 5-4 on the season and 2-0 at the Bronco Classic. Sacramento State falls to 5-5 on the season with the loss. The Vandals wrap up the tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. (PT) against North Texas.
