MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho volleyball team got in its last scrimmage of the fall on Saturday morning. The team rotated personnel groups after every set, switching up the lineup on both sides of the court.
The Vandals have had two-a-day practices for the past three weeks, leading up to classes starting on Monday. Idaho opens the season Aug. 29 when they take on the University of Oklahoma as part of the University of Florida’s opening tournament. Saturday’s scrimmage provided the coaches with a good preview of what to expect on the court in 2014.
“I thought overall it was a very competitive day,” head coach Debbie Buchanan said. “This is the most competitive group of kids that we have had, top to bottom.”
Offensively the Vandals looked strong with outside hitters Tineke Bierma, Ali Forde and Jessica Hastriter getting plenty of opportunities at the net. Freshman Sarah Sharp got the chance to showcase her heavy arm throughout the day as well.
Defensively, Coach Buchanan noted that there is still work to be done before heading down to Gainesville.
“The one thing that we can take away from today that we need to work on is some of our blocking,” Buchanan added. “We need to make sure we are not leaving some seams and can we close that up, especially when we are playing some bigger teams.”
The Silver and Gold open the Florida tournament bright and early with a 7 a.m .PT start against Oklahoma. They will then face host Florida later that afternoon. The Gators open the season as the 10th ranked team in the nation. Saturday Idaho will take on Georgia Southern at 9 a.m.
