The University of Idaho Vandals flexed their muscles Wednesday night as the football team wrapped up winter conditioning with its annual Night of Champions. A selection group from the team was selected to show off their might at the Vandal Athletic Center before an enthusiastic gathering.

"This event honors these players for their work," said strength and conditioning coach Jake Scharnhorst after watching the Vandals' tally of players to reach the 300-pound barrier in the power clean climb to 41. "Overall, our numbers are way better than in 2010."

Linebacker John McKinley, who missed part of 2010 with a broken leg, boosted 374 pounds in the power clean and followed up with 30 repetitions in the 225 bench press to lead both lifts. Defensive lineman/sometimes fullback Henry Asuega benched 410 pounds to earn that title.

The Vandals' winter conditioning consisted of four days of lifting and team runs twice a week - all to be ready for the March 24 opening of spring football. Spring drills will be Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from March 24 until April 23. The weekend sessions are at 3 p.m. with the Saturday practices at 10 a.m. The annual Silver and Gold Game is April 23 at 10 a.m. on the SprinTurf Field.
