A Look at the Falcons:
Seattle Pacific notably beat No. 16 Arizona last season during exhibition, but the team’s success didn’t stop there. SPU went 23-8 overall and advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2012. The Falcons have qualified for eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments and 13 of the last 15 overall. SPU returns four starters from last year’s squad, including a pair of First-Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honorees in David Downs and Andy Poling. The Falcons shot 46.3 percent last season and held a +10.1 rebounding margin, while limiting their opponents to just .390 shooting and 60.7 points per game. They are the GNAC preseason favorite.
Seattle Pacific Head Coach Ryan Looney:
Ryan Looney is in his fourth season at SPU and has led the Falcons to NCAA Division II Tournament appearances in each of his first three seasons. He is 65-24 (.730) as a head coach at SPU and 160-79 overall in his eight-year coaching career. He was the 2010 GNAC Coach of the Year and has guided SPU to three 20-win seasons and three victories over NCAA Division I opponents in the last four tries. He was previously head coach at Eastern Oregon for five seasons.
Vandals vs. Falcons
Idaho’s playing history against Seattle Pacific dates to the 1969-70 season. In a 10-year span, Idaho and SPU played 11 times and the Vandals won six of those contests. Saturday’s game is an exhibition game and won’t count toward the series record. The Vandals posted a 4-2 home record against SPU from 1969-79, with the most recent being a 99-77 victory on Dec. 13, 1979. Idaho has three double-figure wins in the series, including a pair of 22-point victories.
Promo Calendar: Halloween Costume Contest
Saturday’s exhibition game against Seattle Pacific will feature a Halloween Costume Contest with the winner taking home two free pizzas from Pizza Perfection. Fans are encouraged to wear costumes to the game, Vandal-themed or not.
Keep ‘Em Coming
Idaho has 69 wins through Don Verlin’s first four years. That total is the most in a four-year span since 1991-95, when the team had 72 wins. Verlin already ranks sixth all-time at Idaho in total victories. Verlin’s 17.3 average wins per season are fourth-most among Vandal coaches who have served at least three seasons at Idaho. The Vandals’ 37 wins in the last two seasons are the best in a two-season span since 1992-94, when the team won 42 games over two seasons.
WAC Preseason Picks
Idaho men’s basketball was chosen fifth by the media and sixth by the coaches in the 2012-13 WAC preseason polls. Senior center Kyle Barone was selected as a Preseason First-Team All-WAC choice by both groups. WAC coaches narrowly chose New Mexico State as the favorite, while the media picked Utah State.
