A Look at the Lobos
New Mexico is receiving votes in both the Associated Press Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll and the Lobos are fresh off a 66-60 upset of No. 21 Connecticut earlier this week. UNM averages 72.0 points on 41.2 percent shooting while limiting opponents to 67.2 points and a 40.6-percent clip. New Mexico is averaging nearly 25 made free throws per game on 84.6 percent shooting from the line. On top of all that, UNM out-rebounds opponents to the tune of a +6.8 margin. Opponents have 9.8 made 3-pointers per game on .402 shooting so far this year. UNM has a 660-150 (.815) record all-time at The Pit, including a 390-68 (.852) record in non-conference play.
New Mexico Head Coach Steve Alford
Steve Alford is in his sixth season at New Mexico, where he has a 130-46 record and at least 22 wins in each year since he took over. He has led UNM to the postseason each year, including last year’s NCAA Tournament and No. 23 final ranking. He’s led New Mexico to three regular-season Mountain West Conference titles and two tournament titles in the last four years. Alford has also coached at Iowa, Southwest Missouri and Manchester College and has a 434-229 record.
The Vandal men earned their first win of the season on Tuesday after shooting the lights out and holding off Green Bay, 72-62. Idaho hit 60 percent of its 3-point shots and 55.1 percent overall from the floor in the game, while also out-rebounding the Phoenix, 35-27. Idaho made nine 3-pointers in the game, but no Vandal made more than two. Idaho’s season-high 20 assists also came from eight players.
Vandals vs. Lobos
Idaho and New Mexico have played just four times in program history and not since 1994. The Lobos are 4-0 in the series that started on Dec. 28, 1965, with a 99-81 UNM win. Idaho’s most recent trip to The Pit resulted in a 76-54 loss on Dec. 21, 1994. All four games in series history were played at Albuquerque, N.M.
Verlin Gets No. 70
Idaho’s 72-62 victory over Green Bay on Nov. 20 at Memorial Gym was the 70th win in head coach Don Verlin’s career. He’s the sixth coach in Idaho basketball history to achieve that milestone and the first since Vandal Athletic Hall of Fame inaugural inductee Don Monson who won 99 games from 1978-83.
Idaho is 1-3 under head coach Don Verlin in road openers. The Vandals fell at Long Beach State last season, 61-69, and at Washington State in 2010-11, 71-88. Idaho’s last road game against a Mountain West opponent was Nov. 13, 2009, when Idaho knocked off Utah in the 2009-10 season opener.
Not Much Luck Here
The Land of Enchantment hasn’t been too enchanting for Idaho basketball. The Vandals are 1-16 all-time in games played in the state. Idaho is 0-12 all-time at New Mexico State and 0-4 all-time at New Mexico. The team’s only win in the state came in the opening round of the 2007 WAC Tournament, when the Idaho beat San Jose State, 50-49, on a Keoni Watson buzzer-beater in the lane.
