MOSCOW, Idaho – After four intrasquad scrimmages, the Idaho men’s basketball team will finally have a new opponent to face on the hardwood, as the Vandals host Walla Walla University on Nov. 5 in their only exhibition game before the 2013-14 season begins.
“(Playing) Walla Walla is huge because you get a chance to put on your uniform, go through your routine and play somebody different,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said. “Everybody responds differently when it’s game time. I hope when I settle in on a rotation we can get some continuity in what we’re doing.”
The Vandals return two starters from last season -- senior Stephen Madison and junior Connor Hill -- but beyond that only senior Joe Kammerer suited up for Idaho in 2012-13 and returns this season. Ten newcomers join redshirts Ty Egbert and Allen Jiles IV along with Hill, Madison and Kammerer to make up the 2013-14 roster.
“When you’ve got 10 new guys and only four returning guys, every day seems to be a little different,” Verlin said. “What we’ve got to do is settle on a group and go with it. It’s going to be a work in progress until we start playing some live people and figure out how we’re going to play.”
The Vandals went 12-18 in 2012-13 and were picked to finish second by the media and fourth by the coaches in the Western Athletic Conference in 2013-14.
Tuesday’s exhibition begins at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym. Single-game and season tickets are available at the ticket office or by calling (208) 885-6466. Idaho’s regular season opener is Nov. 9 at home against Western Illinois.
