|Small honored again|
DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference selected Idaho's Chelsea Small as its Verizon Wireless Offensive Player of the Week for soccer on Monday after the sophomore's strong performance during the week of Oct. 4-10.
Small, a sophomore from Solana Beach, Calif. (Torrey Pines HS), scored three times and assisted two goals during the week in leading Idaho to wins over Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State. She netted the game-winners in both matches, which give her a WAC-leading seven this season and helped Idaho earn its school-record 12th win of the year.
Small had two goals, with six on-target shots in Friday's 2-0 win over Louisiana Tech, She had six more on-target shots, one goal and two assists on Sunday in Idaho's 4-1, come-from-behind win over New Mexico State.
Records fell on Sunday, as Small set new Idaho standards with her 12th goal and 28th point of the year. With 20 career goals, eight career assists and 48 career points, Small now ranks third in Idaho history in all three of those categories, as well.
The honor is the second of the season for Small, and the third of her career.
Also on Monday, Idaho moved back into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional rankings at No. 9 in the West Region. Idaho had previously held the No. 10 spot on the list for a week earlier this season. The Vandals' ranking this week is the highest in school history.
TopDrawerSoccer.com also lists Idaho as No. 57 in its Tournament 64 Rankings, which the site calls, "a running attempt to project the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers, including every automatic conference berth."
Small and the Vandal women will try to keep their momentum alive this weekend when they travel to Reno, Nev., on Friday to face Nevada, and Logan, Utah, on Sunday, to face Utah State.
