MOSCOW, Idaho - University of Idaho women's soccer coach Pete Showler announced the addition of six new student-athletes to the Vandal family on Wednesday, National Letter of Intent signing day.

Idaho added three midfielders, one forward, one defender and one goalkeeper during the signing period. The high school signees hail from Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada.

At the forward spot, Idaho added Nicole Adams of Phoenix, Ariz. (Desert Vista HS). Emily Ngan is a defender from Portland, Ore. (Cleveland HS), and Marissa Fehrman is a goalkeeper from Las Vegas, Nev. (Faith Lutheran HS). At the midfield, Idaho signed Lilly Archer (Portland, Ore./Grant HS), Katie Baran (Nine Mile Falls, Wash./Lakeside HS) and Annie Millard (Spokane, Wash./University HS).

"We're bringing in a nice blend of very good technical players and feisty players," Showler said. "They're all tactically aware, bring a very good level of understanding of the game, and then in our goalkeeper we have someone who understands the game very well."

Ngan and Archer were club teammates with the Eastside United FC, which has won multiple Oregon state titles, while Millard and Baran have helped the Spokane Shadow club team to a good deal of state and regional success. Fehrman helped Neusport FC claim four consecutive Nevada state titles, while Adams' Sereno Soccer Club has won three Arizona state titles in a row.

"All these girls have played in the big tournaments and have been exposed to high levels of pressure and competition," Showler said. "They understand what the game means at the top level."

While Idaho soccer has had a strong footprint in Oregon and Washington, Fehrman and Adams are the first Vandal soccer players to hail from the states of Nevada and Arizona.

"It shows that we're going everywhere that we need to be, to bring in the best players that we can," Showler said about expanding further into the West region. "More people see what we're doing. Winning brings the exposure, and obviously, the last couple seasons have gotten our name out there."

Idaho lost three players, Mel Canite, Jennifer Eugenio and Jenn Hull, to graduation following its record-setting 2010 season, and Showler said the addition of the six newcomers is going to add even more to the team's solid depth and talent base.

"It's only going to improve the quality and depth that we have with the team, and the competition for each place is going to get better and better," Showler said. "That's what is going to make us more competitive, day to day."

Showler also said he was glad to recognize the achievements of the team's newcomers on Tuesday, which is National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

"It's National Girls and Women in Sports Day, so it's a fitting time that we are able to announce the addition of these quality student-athletes who are going to make us better all around the pitch," Showler said.

All six new Vandals will join the team in August for the 2011 season. Idaho's current roster is in the midst of offseason training, and will open its spring season in one month with a road game at Seattle University on March 5. The spring schedule also includes matches against Washington State, Gonzaga and Oregon, as well as the team's annual Alumni Game.
