|Lozano captures WAC honor|
DENVER - After leading the Idaho women's tennis team to three-straight road victories, Vandal freshman Victoria Lozano has been named the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Lozano, a freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles last week, as the Vandals went 3-0 as a team against UTPA, UTEP and UAB in El Paso, Texas.
"Obviously it's very impressive that she's only a freshman," Idaho coach Tyler Neill said. "She had a lot of experience coming in, but I think even in the fall it took a lot of getting used to. She really found her stride and has become a legitimate number one player."
In Idaho's 4-3 win over UAB on Sunday, the match was tied 3-3 with only the No. 1 singles point still to be determined. Lozano clinched the match for the Vandals with her three-set win at the top spot.
"She was definitely our most clutch player all weekend," Neill said. "Having a player at the top position to set the tone for the rest of the team, and to count on a player to get the win at number one is always huge. She is definitely playing the best she has all year.
Lozano picked up this week right where she left off last week, winning at the No. 1 singles and doubles position for the fourth consecutive day in Idaho's 4-3 win over WAC foe New Mexico State on Monday.
Lozano is now 6-0 at No. 1 singles on the season, and 9-2 in singles overall. The Vandals are 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the WAC this season.
Lozano and the Vandals return to action for four matches in four days when they face Hawai'i-Hilo on March 31, Hawai'i on April 1, Louisiana Tech on April 2 and Chaminade on April 3.
