MOSCOW - There's a new school record holder for career singles victories in men's tennis, and it's senior Alan Shin.

With 84 career singles wins, Shin passed Jim Gerson and Steve Davis for the top spot on the all-time list. Davis first set the record of 81 singles wins in 1977, and Gerson matched it in 1981, and it stood for over 30 years before Shin broke it Feb. 3.

"This is a great accomplishment for Alan with all the great tennis players that have played at Idaho and also considering he did not play at Idaho the fall of his freshman year," Idaho men's tennis coach Jeff Beaman said.

Aiding Shin along the way were a couple of the best individual seasons in program history. Shin won 29 singles matches in 2009-10, the sixth highest total in Idaho history, before upping that mark to 30 in 2010-11, placing fifth on the single-season wins list.

Shin is 9-8 this season, and his record-setting win at Gonzaga helped propel Idaho to a 4-3 match victory. Shin continues to add to his newly acquired record, as he has won his last two singles matches, beating opponents from Nebraska and Creighton.

"His win against GU to set the record was huge for the team and since then he has kept on rolling," Beaman said. "I am looking for him to keep adding to the total as he closes out his senior year."

The Vandals continue play next weekend in Lewiston when they face LCSC and Eastern Washington on March 3.
