LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Six Idaho tennis players were honored by the Western Athletic Conference on Thursday, as the league announced the 2012 men's and women's all-WAC teams.

Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos Salazar earned first-team all-WAC honors for men's doubles play, while Victoria Lozano was a first-team all-WAC selection in women's singles, and teamed up with Almudena Sanz to earn a first-team selection in doubles as well. Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar each earned second-team all-WAC recognition in singles on the men's side, while Sanz was a second-team selection for the women.

Bendeck and Ramos Salazar teamed up to go 7-4 this season, including a 4-4 record at No. 1 doubles and a 3-0 mark at No. 2. Cirstea posted an 11-20 overall record in 2011-12, including a 7-14 record this spring at No. 1 singles. Cirstea earned WAC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 30. Akbar went 17-17 in 2011-12 including a 13-12 record in the spring. He went 12-8 at No. 2 singles and 1-4 at No. 1 singles. Akbar was selected as the WAC Player of the Week on April 16.

Lozano went 22-13 in singles play in 2011-12, including 3-1 at No. 1 singles in WAC play. Lozano was 16-8 at No. 1 singles and 1-0 at No. 2 singles during the spring. She earned WAC Player of the Week honors on March 5 and was the WAC Player of the Month for September. Sanz, who spent all but one match of the spring at the No. 2 singles spot, posted a 20-8 overall record in 2011-12. She went 17-7 at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No. 1. The two teamed up for doubles play in the spring, and went 10-4 together, all at the top doubles spot. The two also went 3-1 together in WAC matches.

Cirstea and Lozano are making their second appearance on the all-WAC teams, as Cirstea was a first-team all-WAC singles selection in 2010-11, and Lozano was a second-team pick in both singles and doubles.

Both Vandal teams have made it to the WAC semifinals. The Idaho women defeated Utah State in the quarterfinals Thursday morning to advance, where they will face either Hawai'i or Nevada on Friday at 11 a.m. The men, who earned the No. 2 seed, earned a first-round bye, and will face either Hawai'i or Utah State in the semifinals on Saturday at noon.
