|Lozano is WAC Player of the Week|
DENVER – Idaho junior women’s tennis player Victoria Lozano earned Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors after going 2-1 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles against WAC foes Seattle U, San Jose State and Texas State last weekend.
Lozano played every match at No. 1 as Idaho went 2-1 in three WAC matches. Lozano’s only loss of the week came to No. 47 Klaudia Boczova of No. 66 San Jose State. She put together a winning performance in Idaho’s 6-1 triumph over Seattle U. Lozano scored a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lindsey Newman and teamed with Almu Sanz to win 8-0 in No. 1 doubles. Lozano also had a straight-set win at No. 1 singles against Texas State’s Jessica Kahts and won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles, helping the Vandals to a 4-3 win over the Bobcats.
“She has been playing really well and she definitely helped our team by getting doubles wins with Almu, which takes pressure off and builds momentum for the rest of the team,” Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. “In singles she has really been stepping up her game in the past month. She has been using everything we’ve been working on all semester and applying it efficiently to her game and performing really well. She has proved that she can beat any player in the conference and she really deserves this WAC Player of the Week honor.”
It is the third WAC Player of the Week honor of Lozano’s career and first this season.
Lozano and the Vandals wrap up the regular season at Utah State on April 20 before heading to the WAC tournament April 25-28 in Denver.
