|Lozano set for US Open Playoff|
MOSCOW – With the fall semester right around the corner, it’s a busy time of year for most college students. However, for Idaho women’s tennis player Vicky Lozano, it’s an entirely different animal that’s capturing her attention the final few days of summer. Lozano will compete in the US Open Mixed Doubles National Playoffs Aug. 21-24 with a chance to earn a spot in the 2013 US Open.
Lozano and partner Patrick Smith, a former UMKC standout, won the UTSA Missouri Valley mixed doubles section earlier in the summer, earning one of 13 spots in the Mixed Doubles National Playoffs, which will yield one berth to the US Open mixed doubles main draw.
“Vicky put a lot of work in this summer and played a strong tournament schedule highlighted by making the semi-finals of two pro doubles events and two quarter finals while playing as an amateur,” Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “I am excited for her upcoming senior year.”
The Mixed Doubles Playoffs will be played at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and features one duo from each of the 13 sections. The US Open runs Aug. 26-Sept. 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
“It’s a great opportunity for Vicky,” Idaho women’s tennis coach Myriam Sopel said. “She definitely has all the tools to reach such a big event. It would be a great for her to compete at the top level. She has been training very hard all summer and she is fully ready for this event.”
