OVERLAND PARK, Kan.—University of Idaho senior Alyssa Charlston, was one of 30 women’s basketball players across the nation named as a candidate for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award. In all 60 men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes, who excel both on and off the court, were announced as candidates on Wednesday. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

“It is always an honor to get recognized for this kind of award,” Charlston said. “I have only my coaches, teachers, teammates and everyone in the athletic department to thank for having such a great influence on me. They have pushed me to be a better leader on the court and in the community. While I’ve been at Idaho I have surprised myself at how much I have improved. I can only credit that to the amazing people surrounding me, including my parents.”

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Charlston was a consensus first team All-WAC selection in the 2012-13 season when she led Idaho to its first WAC Tournament championship and the team’s second berth into the NCAA Tournament. She was among the top 10 in individual conference statistics leaders and top 15 in five separate categories, including field goal percentage. Charlston scored in double figures 25 times and scored 20 or more points on five occasions last season. Charlston led Idaho with 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game and had a team-best 45.3 field goal percentage. The coaches and media both voted her a 2013-14 Preseason All-WAC selection. Entering the 2013-14 season Charlston ranks ninth in school history with 619 total rebounds.

Of the 60 candidates, 20 have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher. There are eight CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-Americans® and seven returning All-Americans. Twenty-four of the 32 NCAA Division I basketball-playing conferences are represented as well.

The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men’s Final Four® and NCAA Women’s Final Four®.

Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
