|Vandals Get Set For Road Stretch|
MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho women’s basketball team should have a lot to be thankful for leading up to Thanksgiving. The Vandals are off to their best start since the 2010-11 season and have won three-regular season games in a row for the third time since last January.
The 3-1 Vandals will head west to the beaches of San Diego to take on the Toreros on Tuesday. Tip off from Jenny Craig Pavilion is set for 6:00 p.m. PT.
“We are looking forward to our trip to play San Diego,” head coach Jon Newlee stated. “They are an extremely talented team, picked second behind Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference. They are big at the post positions and are extremely long on the perimeter with three, six foot plus guards.”
USD is off to a 4-0 start this season with wins over Northern Colorado, Arizona State, San Diego State and San Jose State. The Toreros have averaged 66.5 points per game and 48.8 rebounds in their four wins.
Idaho this season has scored 66.8 points per game and have averaged 46.8 rebounds in its four games this season. The Vandals have outrebounded their opponents in all three of their wins.
“We are going to have to do a great job on the glass to have a chance to be successful,” Newlee said. “It is a great opportunity to go up against another quality opponent on the road and help us get ready for Western Athletic Conference play.”
The matchup has a few personal ties for the Vandals. Sophomore guard Connie Ballestero’s sister, Nicole, used to play for USD before transferring to Vanguard. For coach Newlee it is more of a homecoming, as he grew up in the area and still have family in San Diego.
Idaho holds a 1-0 series lead over San Diego. The only meeting between the two schools came on Jan. 5, 1980. The Vandals defeated San Diego, 82-62, in San Diego.
