|Schaffer, Bothum sweep WAC honors|
DENVER - University of Idaho women swept the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, announced Tuesday, as Lauren Schaffer and Mykael Bothum were rewarded for their performances for the week of Feb. 1-7.
Schaffer, a sophomore from Boise, Idaho (Timberline High School), ran her way into third all-time at Idaho in the indoor 800m on Friday at the Vandal Indoor with a career-best time of 2:11.77 to defend her meet title and give her the conference's top time by a nearly four-second margin.
On Saturday at the Runners Soul Open, Schaffer took fourth in the women's 400m with an indoor personal best of 58.62.
Bothum, a senior from Hermiston, Ore. (Hermiston High School), broke her own school record in the shot put with a toss of 16.88m (55-4.75) at the Vandal Indoor. The throw is the best in the conference by a six-foot margin and ranks fourth in the NCAA this year. It also met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and barely missed the automatic standard by three-quarters of an inch.
Dating back to last January, Bothum has won every shot put competition in which she has competed, except for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships, where she finished seventh. Bothum also took second place on Friday in the women's indoor discus throw with a toss of 47.38m (155-5) . The throw exceeded the NCAA Regional standard for the outdoor discus throw.
Schaffer's honor is the first of her career and the first for an Idaho track athlete this year, while Bothum was honored for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career. Vandal track and field athletes have earned five weekly WAC honors so far this season.
Schaffer, Bothum, and the rest of the Idaho team will be in action at Seattle this weekend at the UW Husky Classic.
