|Ly, Knox claim GU/EWU title|
CHENEY, Wash. - One week after Idaho's Alan Shin claimed the singles championship at the GU/EWU Tennis Invitational, it was Vandal women's players Yvette Ly and Molly Knox who followed suit, winning the doubles tournament on the women's side of the same event.
Ly and Knox teamed up to earn four straight wins in the event, winning 8-1 over Eastern Washington in the round of 16, 9-7 over Gonzaga in the quarterfinals, 8-6 over Seattle University in the semi's and winning 9-7 over Gonzaga in the finals to win the tournament.
"This was a great tournament for Molly and Yvette," Idaho women's tennis coach Tyler Neill said. "They had some big wins and it is nice to see them come through in tight matches. I'm impressed that they are playing so well as a doubles team considering they have only played together for a couple of weeks now."
All four Vandal women who participated in the event won first round matches to advance in the tournament. Ly advanced to the semifinals of the singles side after two straight wins to open the tournament, while Knox and Silvia Irimescu advanced to the singles quarterfinals for the Vandals. Jana Siwa won in the round of 16 in the B singles draw to advance to the quarterfinals.
"I thought Yvette had another great tournament in singles," Neill said. "I think she is playing the best tennis of her college career."
Irimescu and Siwa teamed up in doubles to win two matches before falling in the semifinals.
The Vandals will wrap up the fall season at the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 13-17.
