Mike Iupati's first season of professional football ended much like his senior season at the University of Idaho - with awards coming his way.

Iupati, who started every game at left guard for the San Francisco 49ers, capped his first season as an all-rookie choice by Pro Football Weekly and the Professional Football Writers Association. He also earned mention on the Sporting News all-rookie team, which is chosen by a panel of NFL scouts and Sporting News writers and editors.

Iupati, a consensus All-American after the 2009 season and the highest drafted Vandal in school history, is as well known for his football prowess as his gentle nature and the journey he took from a childhood in American Samoa to his introduction to American football as a high schooler in Los Angeles to the University of Idaho.

He was applauded throughout the season for his ability to adapt to football at the college level - particularly in light of not having played or watched the game at all until he was 14 years old. He earned a starting role early in fall camp for the 49ers and never let up.
