PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - University of Idaho junior Barry Britt took fourth at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships last weekend and helped lead Canada to a second-place team finish.

Britt traversed the 8,000m course in a time of 23:53.8, which was fourth overall and second on the Canadian senior men's squad.

"My race went much better than I expected - kind of a best-case scenario for me," Britt said on Wednesday. "I just kind of locked in with the lead guy and tried to hang with him as long as I could. I hung tough for the first 7k and then the top three guys kind of broke free."

By virtue of their second-place finish at the meet, the Canada men's team is now eligible to compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships on Mar. 20, at Punta Umbria, Spain. Britt said that Athletics Canada will review the team's performance to determine if they will indeed send a full team to the world meet.

If anything, Britt said, the experience gives him a fresh outlook and shows him that he's capable of becoming a top performer both at the NCAA and national level.

"It shows me that I can be a top runner and I can start to do bigger things," Britt said. "I ran with (individual NACAC champion) Robert Cheseret in that race for seven kilometers and he's a multiple-time PAC-10 champion, so it just shows me that I can be an all-American and I can be whatever I want."

Britt says he expects to find out whether he'll be traveling to the world championships sometime in the next week. After having a standout cross country season this fall for Idaho, Britt is redshirting the 2011 indoor track and field season.
