DENVER - Despite beginning just her sophomore season, Idaho's Victoria Lozano has a growing list of honors from the Western Athletic Conference, a list that now includes WAC Women's Tennis Player of the Month after an eye-popping September.

Lozano, a sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico, went 3-1 during September in singles play, advancing to the semifinals in the top flight of the Washington State University Cougar Classic. She won in straight sets against the top players from Boise State, Portland State and Montana State, before falling to the eventual tournament champion, Liudmila Vasilieva of Washington State.

In doubles play, Lozano and partner Sophie Vickers went 2-1, defeating the top pairings from Gonzaga and Portland State at the WSU Cougar Classic.

"She obviously had a great tournament there, especially the first couple of days," Idaho women's tennis coach Dan Pollock said. "She took down some top players and one of the best players in the region, and it just shows what Vicky is capable of when she brings it all together. She works hard out there on the court. She's definitely working hard in practice so it's been nice to see it come together. She still has a long way to go before she peaks in her game, so we have a lot of quality things to see from her in the future."

This is Lozano's first Player of the Month honor, which is given out during the fall season. Lozano was the WAC Player of the Week on March 15, 2011 during her freshman campaign, and was a second-team all-WAC selection in singles, and a second-team all-WAC selection in doubles at the end of last year.

"Based on her results at the Cougar Classic and just how hard she's been working, she deserves it," Pollock said. "I know she put a lot of work in over the summer getting into shape. But at the same time she knows she still has a lot of work to do to be where she wants to be."
