|Vandal pair honored by WAC|
DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference recognized a pair of Vandals on Wednesday as its Verizon WAC Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of Apr. 2-8.
Vandal senior Erica Digby was honored as the Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while sophomore Andrey Levkiv was recognized as Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. It’s the first weekly honor in each athlete’s career.
Digby, a distance runner from Vancouver, British Columbia (Kitsilano Secondary), ran the third-fastest 1500m time in Idaho history on Friday at the Stanford Invitational. Her time of 4:22.18 in the event is the fastest in the WAC by a five-second margin over teammate Hannah Kiser, and is the fastest by a WAC runner since Idaho’s Dee Olson in 2006.
Digby’s time is a 13-second career best and ranks 25th in the NCAA and 13th in the West Region so far this season. It also puts her at third so far this season in her home country of Canada. On Saturday, she followed up that race with a seven-second career best in the 800m of 2:13.46, which ranks eighth in the WAC so far this season.
Levkiv, a thrower from Renton, Wash. (Hazen HS), posted a career-best mark in the shot put for the third weekend in a row with a winning toss of 55-3.5 (16.85m) at the Northwest Scoring Clash WAR V meet at Spokane, Wash. His mark is the best in the WAC this season by a two-foot margin. Already this year, Levkiv has added nearly six feet to his former career-best mark in the event.
Also on Saturday, Levkiv hit a career-best 157-11 (48.13m) in the discus throw, which is second-best in the conference so far this season, and added a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw at 153-4 (46.75m). Levkiv has added more than 12 feet to his career best in the discus this year and 14 feet to his best in the hammer.
The honors give Idaho three so far this outdoor season, along with senior Andrew Blaser’s Field Athlete of the Week honor last weekend. The Vandals claimed a WAC-high 10 Verizon Athlete of the Week awards during the 2012 indoor track and field season.
