MOSCOW, Idaho – With NCAA Championship bids on the line, a squad of Idaho’s men and women’s cross country teams will head to Sacramento, Calif., this weekend for the NCAA West Region Championships.

Historically speaking, last year no Vandals qualified for the NCAA Championship meet. The last time a Vandal competed in the championship meet was in 2011 when Hannah Kiser placed 85th over the 6K course.

Idaho director of track and field/cross country Wayne Phipps said it is always difficult for athletes to maintain the intensity and to stay motivated after putting in so much effort for the conference meet and having success there.

The women’s team is coming off a four-peat Western Athletic Conference championship, while the men’s team finished second at the WAC championship meet.

“This year our practices after conferences have been as good as ever,” Phipps said. “I am excited to see what we can do in Sacramento.”

The West Region is by far the deepest region in the nation, and the Idaho women’s team is currently ranked 13th in the most recent rankings.

“The West Region is the most competitive in the nation with several nationally ranked teams,” Phipps said. “The level of competition at the meet will be second only to the NCAA Championships meet.”

The men’s 10K race is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. PT, while the women’s 6K race follows at 11:45 a.m. Both races will be held at Sacramento’s Haggin Oaks Golf Complex. The top five teams in each region qualify for the NCAA Championships, as do the top four individuals not affiliated with an auto-qualifying team.
