GUELPH, Ontario, Canada - University of Idaho sophomore cross country runner Barry Britt impressed in his debut season as a Vandal, then continued his run of success last weekend at the Canadian Cross Country Championships.

Britt, who earned first-team all-Western Athletic Conference and USTFCCCA All-West Region honors this season, finished seventh overall and sixth among Canadian runners at the national championship meet.

The native of Hampton, New Brunswick, completed the 10,000-meter course in a time of 30:44.5, which was just slightly off pace of his 24th-place showing at the NCAA West Region Championships on Nov. 13.

"It's been an amazing season for him," Idaho cross country coach Wayne Phipps said. "He runs the fastest 8k in school history, then he's all-WAC, then he's all-region, and then to still be able to maintain that high level of performance two weeks after Regionals and run probably his best race of the season at Canadian championships - you really couldn't have come up with a better season for him, I think."

In addition to placing him among the nation's best, Britt's finish now puts him in the selection pool for the Canadian national cross country team, which will compete at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on Feb. 19, 2011, in Trinidad.

"I think his chances of being part of the NACAC team are very good, and then it's just a matter of Canada performing well as a team and being able to move on to the next level of the World Championships," Phipps said.
